When the time came for Grass Roots Group to replace its end-of-life IBM POWER platform, it no longer wanted the burden of maintaining on-premises infrastructure. Grass Roots engaged Meridian IT to move its systems into the Meridian Power Cloud – gaining the benefits of increased scalability, security and performance, while freeing up time to focus on its core business.

Business Challenge

Counting leading telecoms companies such asVodafone, Tesco Mobile and O2 among its clients,Grass Roots Group is a world leader in employee andcustomer engagement solutions.A key aspect of Grass Roots Group’s operationsis providing digital marketing solutions – such ascustomer loyalty programmes – for its telecomsclients. To handle the sheer volume of transactionaldata involved in this sort of activity, the group relies ona set of in-house developed applications running onthe IBM POWER server platform. However, maintainingan on-premises data centre was a time-consumingtask that was distracting the business from its corecompetencies – delivering excellent applications andservices to clients.Tony Gooch, Technial Architect at Grass RootsGroup, takes up the story: 

“Our business is about employee and customer engagement, not data centre management. When we saw that our POWER platform was approaching end-of-life, we knew that it was an excellent opportunity to move to a Cloud-hosted model; with a specialist provider taking care of the infrastructure, we would be free to concentrate on adding value for our clients.”The move to Cloud is also part of Grass Roots Group’s broader strategic direction. “There’s a massive drive within the company to take advantage of the benefits that managed Cloud services offer, especially the scalability and transparent pricing. Cloud hosting also makes it easier to take advantage of the latest technology; with our on-site POWER environment we were still using an old version of the IBM i operating system, which was a real roadblock to platform improvement.”
